Inspirational Film – The Holy Mountain

A few weeks I had the pleasure of a visit to Kino – a regular film night in Elevator Gallery in Hackney Wick. It’s a great venue for a cinema club really cheap entry – I think it was £3 – and cheap beers too which is always a bonus. I seriously need to get out and do more cultural escapades. Being stuck in the studio really limits your creativity.

I went to see The Holy Mountain, a cult film directed by Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky. It reminded me of Dante’s Divina Commedia which I studied for my degree in Italian. I watched the film with no context in which to place it but strong religious allegories run throughout and the inherent symbolism is the visual imagery was unavoidable. The characters in the film are on a similar journey of self-discovery to Dante as they climb the Holy Mountain to reach the Divine. It’s the kind of film you need to watch, study, then watch again which I will be doing once I’ve studied up and contextualised. I’m not going to go into great detail on the plot – Wikipedia that one yourself but it’s worth mentioning that Marilyn Manson, Santigold and MGMT have all shot videos inspired by scenes from The Holy Mountain.

Back to fashion…..so many religious, cult references – not to mention nudity – around at the moment. This film provides a seventies slant on the looks we’ve seen which are more about the dark arts. Seventies is trending strong already in commercial fashion with bell bottoms and stacked heels making their way back.

All in all, it’s a fantastically surreal film, simulatneously beautiful and arresting, wouldn’t advise watching it on a full stomach. There’s so much inspiration for graphics and fashion.

Today sees the start of a new feature on the blog called “We’re not lesbians but……”. This is one of our studio catch-phrases as everyone seems to think we’re a couple or maybe would like us to be a couple. The minute Kath got a Staff it was inevitable – we’re not girly girls so we knew there would be assumptions made with the geezer dog, two Mums, short hair situation, ability to put up shelves. I might get a teacup Chihuahua and some pink marabou in the office.

Anyway we’re not lesbians but ……we are constantly talking about how hot other chicks are so this feature is gonna be about hot girls and starting with Nenah Cherry who I’ve always kind of had glad eye for.

I watched Boyz in The Hood last night and I’ve come over all nineties today – high waited jeans big chunky belt. I was a little obsessed with Nenah Cherry when I was younger. I even had a little mustard quilted bomber jacket which I chucked out – bad move, bad move. We’ve even had some of our vintage 90’s gear used in her recent video but I haven’t got a link to that yet.

So here’s how it works. Trend starts in Tokyo, fashion forecasters go to Tokyo snap it, high-street copies trend too soon, trend doesn’t sell, trend goes into mark-down, directional buyer casts head down in shame for having bought “dog” of the season, trend goes back underground and naturally filters through on street trends, 3 seasons later trend is deemed “commerical” by high-street and sells.

I know this becuase I’m an ex-buyer and designer and I was Queen of “too soon” . I picked up on this trend on a visit to Tokyo 2 and a half years ago – luckily at that point I was a senior designer so I didn’t have to hang my head in shame – some poor buyer did. “Oh dear” my bad, sorry. Anyway I think we’re finally ready for scrunchies on the streets – the Japanese are just incredible. They’re all over something seasons ahead of us – they’re bonkers, my kind of bonkers. Me likey, me lovey. It seems to be the natural progression for the top-knot.

U have to see this. We’d just been hanging out in the park with them havin beers and bitching(that was last week before we detoxed and started being all nice). Checked their website out and were gobsmacked by their visuals. Truly the best visuals we’ve ever seen and we’re party girls so we’ve seen a lot.

It’s a while since we’ve done an “In the Closet with…” feature but I can’t think of a better way to re-introduce than with a Stateside Bitchy friend Selah Says. I first encountered Say in her former life as Melly Shabazz, one half of a duo called the Agyators. The Agyators was probably the first actually the first blog I followed too and it sparked my interest in writing and photography, something that has continued to grow since.

Say represents positivity strength and inspiration for us – we love to follow strong girls everywhere, fearless in speaking their mind, feisty and creative in multiple-disciplines.

Apart from everything else this girls never got a less than KILLER do appealing to our deepest levels of hair shizofrenia.

I’ve been meaning to blog her for what seems like an eternity(I’m a bad blogger, I never promised I’d be good at this) and I think now is the most appropriate time – she’s one of the finalists short-listed to become a Levi’s girl. Please show your support too and vote for her – we re-work Vintage Levis in our Remade collection so would be lovely to see one a friend of BITCHY represent a brand that we work with daily. (We’ve just been commissioned to do a really exciting project for Urban Outfitters UK with vintage Levis but more about that later)

Just Say Say!

Hey world this is Selah Says (pronounced say!)

Up until this monumental point in history, most people have known me by my other alias Melly Shabazz (Google me), when I ran about NYC photographing parties and reeking all types of creative madness under the brand The Agytators (which is now defunct). But honey I had to turn Melly Shabazz into a glass figurine, and put her ass in the back of my great aunt’s menagerie to bite dust—it’s all about Selah Says now!

As Selah Says, I’m continuing the multi-disciplinary artist agenda I began with Melly Shabazz; but now instead of purely focusing on the visual arts (photo, video, self-portraits), I’m branching off into music. I sing and I rap. I know, I know—everybody and their momma sings, raps, and has a demo CD, but 99.9% of them suck monkey balls, and their CDs should be used as coasters at a dive bar. I have the liberty to say such things because I am currently standing behind a 7ft, 340 lbs security guard, come and get me suckas…LMAO!

As for my personal style….I’m the lovechild of Grace Jones, Prince, Joe Strummer, and the monster underneath my bed.

In regards to my musical style…I am Chaka Khan, Lauryn Hill, George Clinton + P Funk and 2pac singing on a Southern Baptist Church Choir on Acid.

I haven’t officially released any of my music. However, you can find videos of me doing my music thing on my Youtube channel. I also have a Facebook page where I share my thoughts. Come visit me at my humble abodes.

And by the way, here’s my latest SONG + VIDEO that I made. On this video entitled “CONCRETE JUNGLE,” I got my PRINCE on. I wrote the SONG and RAP, PHARRELL made the Beat, I sang all the vocals, I recorded and mixed my own vocals, I shot the video, and I edited the video all whilst getting my MC on with the Vocals + Rhyming. I’ve been a big fan of V mag since I was a teen. It was impossible to read due to its A3 size but I kind of liked that it made you bow down, work harder and respect it more. Is it still A3 ? I don’t know as I only ever see it on line. I used to dive straight into it’s saturated shiny pages for inspiration – fashion editorials pack a lot more punch in A3 format than squeezed onto the little screen on my MAC. We’ve got a print-out of this shoot on the wall of our studio. We love 90’s and we love double dropping denim so of course we love this shoot.

Let them eat burgers and chips

A few weeks ago a friend introduced me to a man with a twiddly moustache and a not so twiddly cake habit. I have a really bad cake habit – if I lived in France i would most likely be morbidly obese – so this was sheer delight. The Curious Confectioner creates edible art cakes(and trust me they are) from all manner of unusual ingredients including popping candy, edible glitter, edible flowers and weird berries which he fed us the last time he visited our studio(I can’t remember what they were called but they had a great name that sounded slightly rude which obviously we love).

The Burgers and Chips cakes above – BURGERS AND CHIPS CAKES!!! – were created for the Hackney Wicked arts festival. The only thing better than burgers and chips is burgers and chips cakes don’t you think?

Way too Pink” popping candy biscuit Unicorn Cake – Of course!

I’ve been trying to persuade him to make cake tits for a while now, I’m not quite sure why . There’s something terribly cliche about cupcakes with cherries on top so maybe it’s more of a challenge. I believe the cake tits have been made and I shall be seeing them on Friday. Ha ha I’ve just had a text from him saying he needs to figure out how to transport his jelly. I leave the Destiny’s child cliche’s alone.
