Black and white seems to make everything look perfect and beautiful. I’m definitely one for the traditional film photography so maybe thats why I love black and white so much. oh and how cool is the tattoo in the first image! I’ve never seen anything like it, brilliant idea.

Gitte Lee in Italian Vogue shot by Tim Walker

December 16th, 2010 | M | Fashion, Photography | 1 Comment »

One of the joys of being stranded in Paris airport for ten hours(as we were last week due to snow) is that you don’t feel so guilty about spending an arm(only spent one the other one’s broken) and a leg on fashion magazines. Amongst our supermarket sweep was Italian Vogue.

This shoot featuring Gitte Lee was our favorite. Gitte has been modelling for the last 50 years and was recently featured in a Celine ad. Fashion is so focussed on youth that it was only a matter of time before the cameras turned to the older generation – it’s easy to look hot when you’re young but it gets a little harder as the years go by so kudos to Gitte she’s on fire! Older models should be celebrated and these women give us all something to aspire to. The young model in this shoot pales by comparison – Gitte looks both statuesque and elegant, her eyes and face full of character. The styling is fab, reminiscent of some of the Belle Epoque shapes I’ve been picking up on recently – I’m loving any kind of fur trim. Black and gold’s always a winner.

Whilst googling this I also stumbled upon a great blog called Advanced Style that celebrates “silver haired” street style.

We are loving Nirrimi Hakason

November 19th, 2010 | M | Photography | 3 Comments »

Stumbled across Nirrimi’s blog We Live Young last week, a teenage gypsy with a camera in her hand and a knack of catching the fleeting intimacy of a moment. Only 18 years old she’s been shooting since she was thirteen. She grew up in Queensland – where BITCHY Kath is from – and now lives in Melbourne when she’s not living out of her suitcase. At 17 she shot her first campaign for Diesel and this year she brings out her first book. She describes photography as a way to relive her childhood.

Some imagery is just compellling, plain and simple, no need for further explanation. Dive in and lose yourself for just a moment.

and the Diesel Campaign…

I have so many stored on my computer that i look at almost daily for inspiration on styling, make up, hair, photographic styles and just for something to look at! I love having that sneaky peak into someone else’s life, especially when it involves great style and a great location! The shoes in the last picture are by Gabriella Marina Gonzalez, also stocked in our online store.  Enjoy!

Christmas Wish-list ID Magazine published by Taschen

November 4th, 2010 | M | Fashion, Photography | No Comments »

I’m not really sure if this is a subtle ear whisper hint or a poke in the ribs but this is on my wish-list for sure. To commemorate ID’s 30th Anniversary Taschen have charted the mags history with a book of Covers.

Possibly my favorite Mag cover ever was Devon Aoki in Jeremy Scott. I think I still have it somewhere.

The shoot was also used as an illustration for his SS10 invite replacing Devon with the Queen.

Kaws/Original fake – July 2008, this is in the ispiration pile somewhere. I’m working on a project at the moment that’s not too far off this.

This one’s from 2010 but I LOVE it. It’s stuck on my inspiration wall.

Bjork June 2007 – “Some people think I’m bonkers” – yup, they do.

Grace Jones April 1987 and Jessica Stam Sept 2004

Sade April 1983 and Lisa Stansfield Jan 1989

Joining me on the blog Holly…….

October 27th, 2010 | Holly | Bitching and Junkfood News, Fashion, Photography | 2 Comments »

But before her introduction mine……Holly interned with use before the Summer(it might have been during the Summer, I have no concept of timeframes at the moment). As with most designers I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to aesthetics and direction – I don’t give up that control lightly. Holly was cool, we liked hanging out with her and she’s got that little bit of ditsy that I find really endearing. This chick’s seriously clued in, well talented and we’ve a similar eye, I guess we just bonded creatively so I decided to invite her back to blog on a more regular basis, she came over, we drank vodka, discussed some ideas and so it begins……..

So the beautiful girls at Bitching and Junkfood have asked me, Holly, to start blogging for them! Of course I couldn’t say no so here I am! Just a quicky, I’m a third year student at UCA Epsom studying Fashion Promotion and Imaging, grew up in the good ol’ welsh countryside, i suppose basically on a farm so no idea where fashion came into it but here I am. Now living in Brighton and find inspiring things all around me. I have a weakness for Street style (addicted to blogs and lookbook) photography, beauty and anything a little bit naughty and rough around the edges! Maybe I should say I like ugly beautiful things…does that make sense? Hope you enjoy the post and many more to come!

When we get a holiday we’d like it here….

October 11th, 2010 | M | Art, Photography | 1 Comment »

I’m a city girl, I need to live somewhere hectic, vibrant and usually dangerous in a “myself are your father aren’t happy with you walking home at night in your new place love” kind of area – reasons why I’ve lived in Dalston, Brixton and Hackney Wick, guess I’m not content playing it safe. There’s also a big side of me that would like to run to the hills and make pottery, draw pictures surrounded by dogs and horses so the below hotel appeals to that side.

Imagine going on holidays in a UFO in the middle of a forest!

Fittingly called Tree Hotel It’s located just outside the small Swedish village of Harads 60KM south of the arctic circle. There treehouses are designed by 6 separate architect and situated high above the forest floor. Snow, cold, fur, silence and isolation – beats Benidorm any day.

Photographic Inspiration – Robert Maplethorpe.

October 6th, 2010 | M | Photography | 2 Comments »

I’m reading somewhere this morning that Givenchy SS11 is inspired by the black/white photography of Robert Maplethorpe. Givenchy has to be one of my fave collections so far but I hadn’t actually heard of Robert Maplethorpe until now – don’t know how this photographer managed to pass me by. Having studied Graphic Art in Brooklyn he stared shooting on Polaroid and moved onto Hasselbad in the 70’s takingpictures of friends and celebrities such as Grace Jones, Debbie Harry, Andy Warhol and Patti Smith. His subjects were primarily people, flowers, homoeroticism and BDSM which proved extremely controversial to conservative middle America. One of his exhibitions was seized by the American Family Association who called it “nothing more that the presentation of potentially obscene material” – success!  Below are some of my favorites.

Amazing composition with Patti Smith(his lover). A domestic scene with sinister undertones – the your eyes can’t help being drawn to the knives in the background, an object that featured widely across his work.

His black/white photography can only have been a massive source of inspiration to the controversial Benetton Campaigns of the nineties.
