Bumped into little pink lady Alis yesterday whilst shooting in Bethnal Green – the following is one of her most recent recent projects.
Our “getting out of the studio and going to things more” plans didn’t manage to get us as far as this event so we’ll have to make do with writing about it instead. Unfortunately the London show was only on for two days before it set off on it’s world tour.
Using the New Era 59Fifty as a blank canvas, creatives worldwide were invited to put their mark on the cap, customising it without restriction. With a final award of a 10K bursary to further their careers, 10 entries from each of the eight countries involved were selected to go on the travelling exhibition.
Ten finalists were selected from the UK including East London Photographer Alis Pelleschi, who’s had work published in Vice, Super Super, Nylon and i-D. Her creation summed up in her own words – “Disney Princess, Bradford, Pink Mania, Bradford Bulls, Taurus, fake gold, tacky pink gem phone cases, cyber warrior expolsion”. Nuff said. If you want the full strawberry scoop and a look at the other entries check it out on the New Era Introducing website.
Recently featured in 125 Magazine, which is an amazing magazine – you should buy it, I’ve become more than a little obsessed with photographer Miles Aldridges work. London based, born in 1964, Miles went to Art school before turning his hand to fashion photography when he submitted pictures taken of his girlfriend to a modelling agency.
I’m really interested in the sinister David Lynch edge he lends to his work though clever use lighting and image crops more likely to be found in art composition. He’s worked extensively with magazines including Vogue, Numero, Vogue Homme, Vogue Italia, Vogue Japan and the New York Times.
The “Madonna” shoot below was featured in Numero back in 2007 but is more relevant than ever today.
Photographer Ignacio Torres took the theory that mankind is made from cosmic matter from the death of stars as a starting point. Through the use of 3D animated GIF’s the models bodies are frozen drawing attention to space and time as a concept – as with all photographic imagery trapped in a frame before our eyes. The stardust lends a somewhat ephemeral mysticism of the great unknow to the images faces obscured linking mankind to nothing more than matter.
WOW, I’ve finished my four year degree course…it’s been a long road but I’m finally done! And to celebrate I’ve made a compilation on floral images to get me, and any other late comers, in the summer spirit! Bring on a summer full of sun, festivals and beaches and best of all, no uni work!!
3D seems to be huge at the moment, with TV’s, Games, Computers and all sorts bringing out versions of this new technology. Fashion is also embracing the trend with the likes of Burberry streaming shows in 3D and Ralph Lauren going as far as 4D! Fashion editorial is also taking it on, with the trade mark blue and red shadows and free glasses appearing more and more often (Dazed&Confused for example) in magazines. I have to say my only experience of 3D (with glasses) was a recent nuts magazine laying around guys friends flat, amusing but not really artistic! I still have to see a movie in 3D too! I do actually like 3D ready images like the ones shown above with out glasses as well tho, it kind of makes them look a bit mystical!
We’ve been seeing a lot of smoking references recently, with Kate Moss dragging on a fag in the Louis Vuitton AW11 show and now Adele on the cover of The Gentlewoman magazine…is it becoming cool again? I personally don’t smoke but I have to admit there is something sexy about a beautiful woman with a cigarette in her hand (in a picture anyway as I cant stand the smell!). Im not sure what to make of this possible trend so I found some nice photographs instead!
Black and white seems to make everything look perfect and beautiful. I’m definitely one for the traditional film photography so maybe thats why I love black and white so much. oh and how cool is the tattoo in the first image! I’ve never seen anything like it, brilliant idea.
One of the joys of being stranded in Paris airport for ten hours(as we were last week due to snow) is that you don’t feel so guilty about spending an arm(only spent one the other one’s broken) and a leg on fashion magazines. Amongst our supermarket sweep was Italian Vogue.
This shoot featuring Gitte Lee was our favorite. Gitte has been modelling for the last 50 years and was recently featured in a Celine ad. Fashion is so focussed on youth that it was only a matter of time before the cameras turned to the older generation – it’s easy to look hot when you’re young but it gets a little harder as the years go by so kudos to Gitte she’s on fire! Older models should be celebrated and these women give us all something to aspire to. The young model in this shoot pales by comparison – Gitte looks both statuesque and elegant, her eyes and face full of character. The styling is fab, reminiscent of some of the Belle Epoque shapes I’ve been picking up on recently – I’m loving any kind of fur trim. Black and gold’s always a winner.
Whilst googling this I also stumbled upon a great blog called Advanced Stylethat celebrates “silver haired” street style.
Stumbled across Nirrimi’s blog We Live Young last week, a teenage gypsy with a camera in her hand and a knack of catching the fleeting intimacy of a moment. Only 18 years old she’s been shooting since she was thirteen. She grew up in Queensland – where BITCHY Kath is from – and now lives in Melbourne when she’s not living out of her suitcase. At 17 she shot her first campaign for Diesel and this year she brings out her first book. She describes photography as a way to relive her childhood.
Some imagery is just compellling, plain and simple, no need for further explanation. Dive in and lose yourself for just a moment.
Here’s a few images i’ve found online recently. Love them all! I have so many stored on my computer that i look at almost daily for inspiration on styling, make up, hair, photographic styles and just for something to look at! I love having that sneaky peak into someone else’s life, especially when it involves great style and a great location! The shoes in the last picture are by Gabriella Marina Gonzalez, also stocked in our online store. Enjoy!
I’m not really sure if this is a subtle ear whisper hint or a poke in the ribs but this is on my wish-list for sure. To commemorate ID’s 30th Anniversary Taschen have charted the mags history with a book of Covers.
Possibly my favorite Mag cover ever was Devon Aoki in Jeremy Scott. I think I still have it somewhere.
The shoot was also used as an illustration for his SS10 invite replacing Devon with the Queen.
Kaws/Original fake – July 2008, this is in the ispiration pile somewhere. I’m working on a project at the moment that’s not too far off this.
This one’s from 2010 but I LOVE it. It’s stuck on my inspiration wall.
Bjork June 2007 – “Some people think I’m bonkers” – yup, they do.
But before her introduction mine……Holly interned with use before the Summer(it might have been during the Summer, I have no concept of timeframes at the moment). As with most designers I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to aesthetics and direction – I don’t give up that control lightly. Holly was cool, we liked hanging out with her and she’s got that little bit of ditsy that I find really endearing. This chick’s seriously clued in, well talented and we’ve a similar eye, I guess we just bonded creatively so I decided to invite her back to blog on a more regular basis, she came over, we drank vodka, discussed some ideas and so it begins……..

So the beautiful girls at Bitching and Junkfood have asked me, Holly, to start blogging for them! Of course I couldn’t say no so here I am! Just a quicky, I’m a third year student at UCA Epsom studying Fashion Promotion and Imaging, grew up in the good ol’ welsh countryside, i suppose basically on a farm so no idea where fashion came into it but here I am. Now living in Brighton and find inspiring things all around me. I have a weakness for Street style (addicted to blogs and lookbook) photography, beauty and anything a little bit naughty and rough around the edges! Maybe I should say I like ugly beautiful things…does that make sense? Hope you enjoy the post and many more to come!
I’m a city girl, I need to live somewhere hectic, vibrant and usually dangerous in a “myself are your father aren’t happy with you walking home at night in your new place love” kind of area – reasons why I’ve lived in Dalston, Brixton and Hackney Wick, guess I’m not content playing it safe. There’s also a big side of me that would like to run to the hills and make pottery, draw pictures surrounded by dogs and horses so the below hotel appeals to that side.
Imagine going on holidays in a UFO in the middle of a forest!
Fittingly called Tree Hotel It’s located just outside the small Swedish village of Harads 60KM south of the arctic circle. There treehouses are designed by 6 separate architect and situated high above the forest floor. Snow, cold, fur, silence and isolation – beats Benidorm any day.
