Take your passion, and make it happen-Films and Fashion.
December 11th, 2009 | Jenny-Los Angeles | Fashion | No Comments »Los Angelinos has a reputation of a penchant for flip flops and jeans and rumour has it we never get out of our yoga pants. None of the really big fashion houses are based here, our fashion week is not on the to do list for Anna Wintour, or even for many designer that ARE based here (Jeremy Scott showed his last one in London, Rodarte shows in NY and the list goes on.).
So, Los Angles may or may not be the epitome of Fashion, but one thing we are REALLY good at is film, and film is a constant inspiration and trendsetter for the fashion world.
Back in 1955, James Dean’s white t-shirt and leather jacket in Rebel without a cause made its way from the silver screen into any self styled rebels staple wardrobe.
And six years later Audrey Hepburn gave women an ideal look with sleeveless dresses, triple strand pearl necklaces and over sized sunglasses from her character in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
In the original version of Shaft back in 1971, Richard Roundtree’s three-quarter-length leather jackets and leather pants combined with turtlenecks made him a fashion icon and almost thirty years later Giorgio Armani drew inspiration from the very same look along the release of the remake in 2000.
Before the release of Saturday night fever John Travolta wanted his character to wear a black suit but was convinced by designer Patriza von Brandenstein that white would stand out in the disco lights…and stand out it did. The year of 1977 became the year of polyester suits in electric colours, open collars and medallions dangling between chest hairs.
And who would have known that a shrunken sweatshirt that had to be cut open in the neck in order for Jennifer Beals Flashdance character to even get in to it would make active wear trendy? 1983 was the year girls went amok on their Sweatshirts, and wore these decapitated creations with Spandex leggings, legwarmers, headbands and hightops.
The list goes on and on. And didn’t M just a few days ago blog about how Vampires has invaded Fashion..well..Twilight, Let the right one in, Vampire Diaries…I’m just saying… It may be fiction, but what happens to fashion in film will happen to fashion in reality.
But what will be the next big trendsetting film? A few months ago I would have put my money and my hopes on “Amelia” about Amelia Earhart. Not only was she an awsome woman, but she also had great sense style.
I have seen a few pilot jackets around, but no where near as many as I would have wanted, and although I don’t think we should count Mrs Earhart’s mannish aviator style out completely just yet I am wondering what the other contenders are?
Without a doubt the most anticipated film of the year is Avatar, http://www.avatarmovie.com/ . Directed by James Cameron with new technology to create a 3D world like it has never been seen before, it has had Hollywood and its surroundings fed with rumours and gossip for years. It premieres world wide on December 18th and I forsee a…blue …spring? Blended with a tiny bit of camouflage and topped off with a healthy dose of native feathers
