Monster Colour – A New Way To Do Hair… Again

November 22nd, 2009 | Kara | Fashion | 1 Comment »

VogueUK-nov09-CarmenKass-MarioTestino

So, M banned anymore hair posts for a couple weeks around here, but breaking the rules is one of my specialties (Sorry!). I’ve been thinking a great deal about hair recently, as I’m on the lookout for a standout-ish accessory to revamp myself with post break-up. Actually, I’m always thinking about my hair ever since I had to chop it all off and start afresh after my first hair treatment in the Middle East (migrating and finding new people to trust with various parts of your person is a bitch). When heading out for the evening, I’ve mostly been splitting my coiffuring experiments between the bird’s nest hair that M posted about and the faux shaved-and-side-swept Alice Dellal (with the help of copious gel). But ever since spotting Carmen Kass in November’s UK Vogue topped off with thick braids that look like they just barely survived Phagwah, I’ve been cuckoo for chunks of out of control colour.  My hairdresser is NOT going to be pleased.

This dress will change your life

This dress will change your life

I’ve started this post maybe seven times now because I struggle to put into words the giddy excitement myself and Kath felt when we layed eyes on THE DRESS. I guess that’s where my grasp of language falls short becuase this dress deserves a high-brow blog post that I, unfortunately, am insufficiently eloquent to write so dress I’m sorry but I will give it my best shot, go easy on me and don’t look down on my humble ramblings.

Pleased to meet you-I am Jenny.

November 16th, 2009 | Jenny-Los Angeles | Bitching and Junkfood News | 4 Comments »

This phrase is one of those phrases that when I hear it, or think it or even just write it, I will burst in to laughter.

My friend Amanda, an American from Boston, not the Bible belt, was in the UK to visit her boyfriends parents over Chistmas. On the very eve of Christmas, she was taken along to midnight mass. As is (apparently) custom at the end of mass, the congregation turns to each other, shakes hands and wishes “peace be with you”. Amanda, unfamiliar with this behaviour, accepts the hand of the woman next to her and replies with a big smile on her face-Pleased to meet you too-I am Amanda!

Flesh Eating Vampire Zombies….a fashion trend.

November 12th, 2009 | M | Fashion | 3 Comments »

My human hair jewellery has evoked horror, shock, love and delight. I’m very happy. One of the neckpieces has completely sold out since it went live last week. Am I a little sensationalist? Maybe. I’ve always said, I like things that provoke reactions, good and bad. We’re human, we have feelings and to be able to evoke those feelings through an image or a thing is powerful. Life  can be anti-septic, bland, safe and too PC(athought French Vogue’s blacked up shoot, not cool). Disgust and excitement should be encouraged and I think the shoots in this post evoke both.

Halloween is well and truly over but gore is here to stay. Blood curdling fashion shoots have been on my radar for a while. My housemate works on zombie films and it’s fascinating the amount of different fake blood effects, tonality and consistencies there are.

This did not make the final cut.

Where the Wild Things Have Been

If you haven’t read it, you’ve probably all seen a tattered copy gracing the dusty shelves at your local library as a kid. And if you’ve never laid eyes on Maurice Sendak’s popular children’s book Where the Wild Things Are (and that’s weird, mind you), then there’s no doubt that by now you’re more than familiar with it this year because of all the movie’s surrounding hype.

The End of Hackney Wick – it’s official, I saw today.

The first of a two -part post,  an epic tale of warehouses, fashion shoots, graffitti, cold, sewing, blogging, tweeting, partying – or maybe just a little rant.

We’ve not been hear a year yet and it’s sadly come to an end. As Bitching and Junkfood expands we move to new studios by  Broadway Market at the end of the month. We’ve felt it for a while, started with Chloe(fine artist friend), then Martin(another fine artist) then the Dubstep producers next door and, last week, Nick IDM. I was going to wait a couple of weeks before I bid my fairwell with a final blog post but I guess that what I witnessed today underlines the end and pretty much puts a full stop after it too. The is the Hackney Wick Argmageddon and this time it’s not a fashion trend.

When Bitching and Junkfood was a Swarovski-size glint in my eye I decided that Hackney Wick(an East London Warehouse District) was the place to get the little Bitch off the ground. This time last year  we started looking for studios – I googled “Warehouse Hackney” and up popped the most amazing space I’d ever seen – a huge warehouse, empty and draughty , the kind of space you’d ususally find a B+Q or maybe even a Tesco. Six of use came together to make this our studio and moved in on the 22nd of December. I flew back from Dublin on the 28th to work 12 hour days with a team of 7 people to build our studios and I mean build – we built the floors, ceilings, stairs, walls. It was probably the most challenging thing I’ve done so far – it was -5 degrees inside and we worked day and night to get the space ready.

Lovely Summer's Day on the canal with some charming graffiti vandals

Edgy 80’s Kink or Bonham Carter Bird’s Nest – you decide.

Yesterday we were talkin hair jewellery today let’s have a chat about Hair – always been one of my fave topics. I received my lovely daily mail from www.whowhatweardaily.com and to be honest it was almost like they’d read my comments on hair rage and other follicle induced disorders.

I spent years chemically straightening mine. One of my first buying trips to the far east saw me step off a 12 hour flight only to be whisked away to Toni and Guy for a Yukko treatment involving 6 hours of chemicals, straightening irons, some mild jet-lag and culture-shock induced halucinations.

Been wondering what to do with my tantrum throwing tresses since going cold turkey on my chemical straightening dependencies. Had it shaved last year after stepping off a 12 hour flight from LA(note to self, must leave hair alone after flying), toyed with the idea of corn-rows one side, curls other, still not convinced corn-rows on white scalp is for me – give me a few months on that one though.

Human Hair and Leather Earrings

Human Hair and Leather Earrings

I spent the last couple of years as a jewellery designer before I decided to free-fall in the fashion world. Free falling has been a lot of fun soo far but terrifying at times. I guess the things I like to design are a little bit terrifying too. Hair jewellery evokes odd reactions – I find it interesting, so many girls wear weaves and extensions, actually woven into their own hair so why would the concept of hair jewellery seem so odd. Interesting how attitudes change when taken out of safely established contexts – I think that’s why I love it as a material. I feel the same with my animal skull pieces.

I’ve always been obsessed with hair – I have a big unruly mop of it that refuses to be controlled by the powers of Parlux(best hair dryer on the market). I used to have rages, my hair flick-switching a bright and breezy me into into the Antichrist – still happens occasionally(we all have our excuses). Hair is powerful and has many meanings in different cultures. The Victorians attached great importance to it – you’ve probably familiar with lockets holding a lock of the hair from the deceased worn around the neck to keep them close to the wearer.  Well it did’t stop at lockets, there were intricately woven bracelets and cabachons too, a beautiful example of which is shown below. Kind of spooky, a little bit eary.
