Sparkle no more for Sumo?
October 30th, 2009 | Sumo- Dublin | Fashion | Tags: Sequins | 3 Comments »Some of you may know that I was born with the fat, wrinkly appearance of a Sumo wrestler. But also the uncontrollable desires of a magpie- my fingers cling like magnets to anything that sparkles, shines and shimmers. The first explains my nickname, the latter- my wardrobe. When my eldest sister moved to London, she left behind nothing but a vacant room and an almost vacant wardrobe – nothing but two sequined boob tubes (circa 1993). At 15, my magpie mind was in the final stages of development and these tops were like my graduation reward. Slowly but surely they glistened their way into my outfits and by 16 I was sparkling all over the underage dance floors of Dublin’s lovely dives. I got three years out of those spangly tops before her acute sparkle radar whipped them out of my wardrobe one Christmas and brought them back to London. And that was that for me and sequins….. DONT THINK SO! It only got worse (or better?)- slowly but surely my wardrobe turned into a massive cave of sequined delights.

In Sparklier days..
Then sequins exploded onto the catwalks like a massive meteor shower. Had my prayers been answered? I thought so. From Gucci to Balmain to Emma Bell, sequins had come back with a big sparkly bang for A/W 09! And like any strong trend we’ve seen them glitter bomb their way onto high street over the past few months.

Happy Sumo? NO! Don’t get me wrong, my part time wage loves when catwalk trends work their way onto high street. But not when they’re turned upside down and ruined. Many Dubliners have an awful habit of latching onto a trend and sucking the life out of it. This is what’s happened to sequins. We can’t turn a corner in Dublin anymore without being blasted by four girls- 6 inches of make up, fake hair, fake nails and head to toe in skin tight sequined attire- bleugghhh!
So my sequined delights have hung like sleeping bats from my wardrobe over the past while..:( Can Primark please mass produce some other trend so I can wear my vintage sparklers again please? Then I can try get my hands on this offering from Ashish S/S 10 below- we’ve already reported on Olympics inspired clothing and adding sequins pushes this trend onto the dance floor! Afterall, swinging from the rafters in sequins all weekend must be as physically demanding as a running 5 miles right??

I sympathise. My inner magpie has had to go in to hibernation until this sequin storm dies down. My aim is to find a new ways to wear them, but until then lots of lace is a pretty sweet substitution x
`Definately, I’ve invested in lace gloves and a leotard too – might sneak something glittery onto the gloves to get my fix!
Lady Miss B gotta lot to answer for!
