Marc Jacobs SS10 – all things to all people?

Undulating ruffled shoulders
Marc Jacobs is tired of seeing girls in black and studs. What about black and frills then? According to the man himself this collection has been designed to encourage individuality. I surprised myself. Not usually a fan of Marc Jacobs, there were several pieces that I would open my wardrobe doors and roll out the black carpet for.
I was slightly overwhelmed by the amount amount of references in this collection. I picked up on the following – Edwardian, Inca/tribal, Indian, Romantic, Oriental, The King and I. Maybe this is what he meant about encouraging individuality. My initial thoughts were to write that the collection lacked synergy however this is actually something that re-inforces his point on indiviuality – I think that there’s something to appeal to everyone in this collection and I’ve pulled out some of my favorites below. It will be an interesting exercise to monitor commentary on this collection and prove this point. My choices are dark and Edwardian – there will be others that look peachy and romantic or distinctly oriental in tone.
The Emphasis is well and truly back on the neck, the ruff being the one key element that was used to synergise the entire catwalk collection.
I reported ruffs as a street trend I felt strongly for a few months ago – Chanel sent this look down the runways for AW09 and Marc has clearly placed a focal point on the neck for SS10.

Frills and frou-frou

Great hair and make-up, so much going on in the collection simplicity was key however the re-interpreted Geisha look complemented a key theme running through the collection. Ruffs frame porcelain faces perfectly and the make-up subtly enhanced delicate features brought into focus by the neck-pieces.

Great tailoring

Wow, I think this is the first time Marc Jacobs has excited me! I wonder what triggered this?
Love the ruffled neck piece- can definately see more of these emerging on the streets.
It’s interesting becuase there have been very mixed reports on this but I think it’s his best collection for several seasons. Maybe the Marc purists are having a hard time with it.
