Line Jorddal- Black or White

A couple of weeks back I visited the New Designer’s Show in the Design Centre, Highbury and Islingon. I’m still working my way through those I rated the most. Having been a jewellery designer and buyer for the last 5 years this is one area that I naturally gravitate towards. I passed by Line Jorddal’s stand and unfortunately missed her which is a shame as I’d really like to have discussed her collection in greater detail.I’ve been trying to track her down but I think she’s back in her native Norway for Summer.

Inspired by war protests, saving the environment and pop cultures she plays with scale and injects urban culture into what she designs. The collection “Black or White” was inspired  by Micheal Jackson and racism – does this girl have a crystal ball? Maybe not, no crystals on this collection, a mix of chunky biker chains and heavy pop-culture pendants. Black or White is a theme that we’ve seen cropping-up a lot recently and it was present at Chanel(it always is), Givenchy and Alexander McQueen for AW10

The tone of the collection was hard and  agressive with a tough military feel which evokes a strong reaction. You either love it or hate it.  I personally attach a lot of emotion and feeling to clothing and accessories. I guess it’s similar to how I approach art. I don’t like things that are nice to look at – I want emotion, I like to feel unnerved, intimidated, warm or happy. Line’s work definitely leans to the dark, hard, intimidating end of the spectrum much like the themes that inspire her.

Unfortunately I couldn’t track down large images to appreciate this collection in all it’s glory but think Chunk, Pendulous, Tanks, Clunk-Fun-Armour and you got it.
