Cheap Neon at Elevator Gallery

Up, down, up, down, up, down – no not the pills didn’t take any, the entrance to Cheap Neon at Elevator Gallery aptly name after the big ole crank-it-up elevator that brings you to the entrance, one of the dicing with death, stuck between floors, shit I’m claustrohphic types. Elevator working, mission two, find the actual floor which is best done with ear pressed to door but not on door for fear of grinding to a hault – refer back to claustrophia comment.
Lived up to the cheap part of the name, £3 entrance and luckily the neon was confined to the sign on the wall – new ravers there were not, old ravers a few, artists, vagabonds, and folk of interesting tale and twiddly facial hair a plenty. Dancing was happening and not the asymetric east fop gangle but more of a day release shake sure to be a big hit with the boyz in Brooklyn.
Act we managed to see was a french electo artist with a loo roll for a necklace – Douce Angoisse “toilet paper thief”(in her own words) – amazing idea, think of the possibilites…. sure to take off at festivals and squat parties, particularly topical as the recession forces pubs to reign in toilet paper budgets. There’s something brilliant about breathless word over electro backdrops that only the french can carry off. This little pixie contrasts with sexy voice with a full on stomp of energy as she pounded her petite black plimsoles across the floor capitvating everyone in the room.
Elevator = unhinged fun
Douce Angoisse = bonkers brilliant
